These criteria must be met in order to be eligible for assistance from the Iowa Lutheran STO:

  1. The child(ren) must be in grades K-12 as of the 2020-21 school year. At this time, preschool is not supported by the law.

  2. Family income (defined as the amount shown on Line 7b of the Federal Tax Form 1040 - Click to access this form online) can be no more than 400% of the poverty level.

  3. The goal of the STO is to help as many families as possible, so feel free to email questions to:

  4. The deadline for applying for assistance is April 24, 2020. It is the goal of the STO to advise people of the status of their applications by May 8, 2020.

Poverty Guidelines


Below are the Poverty Guidelines by Size of Family and Number of Children for 2020 as published by the U.S. Census Bureau (Click for Official Site). Refer to these when determining income guidelines for families requesting tuition grants:

* STO qualifying levels are based upon 400% of 2020 Federal Poverty Levels as required by Iowa law.

**Family size includes parents/guardians plus total number of dependents claimed on 2019 tax return. For families with more than 12 persons, add $4,480 to the 12 Persons in family Poverty Guideline and $17,920 to 12 Persons in family STO 400% amount for each additional person.

*** Families are eligible for STO assistance if their taxable income is at or below the above listed income levels. Local assistance may not be based upon the above. Falling within these guidelines does not necessarily guarantee tuition assistance.
